#STAYCATION : ROMNEY MARSH SHEPHERDS HUTS

As part of our #staycation series, we were invited to stay at Romney Marsh Shepherd’s huts by Kristina and her husband Paul. The huts are situated on their farm that’s been in their family for over 130 years.

Our journey from Tunbridge Wells takes us south to Romney Marsh in around 50mins by car taking in some beautiful Kent countryside. We arrive on the farm and are warmly greeted and shown where to park, my 3-year-old son who is joining me on this staycation is a ball of excitement having spotted all sheep in the fields!

We unpack the car and start making our way across the field of 'Kentish Sheep’ to our home for the night. Our hut, named Lookerer is one of two on the farm that stands proudly upon the flat plains. Romney Marsh is an area of outstanding natural beauty and you can instantly see why. Our views across the fields were stunning and you really felt like you’re were away from it all with only the sound of the birds, cows and the sheep. The coastline was nearby too with miles of sandy beaches to explore.

We open the doors to our hut and instantly feel at home, the self-contained accommodation has a small kitchen, shower and toilet, a very inviting cosy double bed, and log burner which we lit straight away. Since 2008 Kristina and Paul have been selling a range of wool items derived from their home-grown fleeces, Romney Marsh Wools. The hut features lots of these items to add extra comfort to your stay, my favourite being the hot water bottle and shower gel.

Once unpacked we wandered around the nearby fields and my son, who had now taken the official role of ‘Shepherd’ was busy at work trying his best to herd the sheep! I managed to coax him back to the hut just before dark with some giant marshmallows over the open fire pit outside.

We spotted stars in the night sky and read endless stories before bedtime, it was bliss to be cut off from WiFi and screens and really made us enjoy the stay even more. The log burner kept us warm and toasty throughout the night and in the morning we were woken by sheep just outside the hut.

The kitchen was so well equipped that we barely needed anything additional for our stay, a complimentary breakfast box for two people included sausages, eggs, bread, milk, and bacon all sourced locally or from the farm. This was such a treat and was thoroughly enjoyed while taking in the morning haze across the fields.

We stayed for one night but feel a two-night stay would have been a great way to really escape from it all and switch off. We loved it here and will definitely be back to explore more of the area and stay on the farm, possibly this lambing season. We stayed here in November 2020 and my son has not stopped talking about our adventure and the time he was a shepherd. Happy son = Happy Mum 😊

Thank you Kristina & Paul
