Last night I returned to The Counter, and it was every bit as special as I remembered. I first met Chef Robin Read back in 2022, when he was running a pop-up in Rusthall. Fast forward to today, and he’s made his mark with his very own restaurant at 77 Calverley Road in Tunbridge Wells.
The space has a modern, artistic feel, beautifully designed with warm energy from the team and a relaxed, welcoming vibe. But of course, the real star here is the food.
We’re genuinely lucky to have someone as talented and thoughtful as Robin in town. His cooking feels deeply personal, but every ingredient carefully considered, every flavour perfectly balanced. He champions local, seasonal produce, grows his own herbs on-site, and brings so much heart to each dish.
The tasting menu changes weekly, with the option of 5, 8, or 10 courses. I went for the 8, and these were a few of my standouts: • Pot barley orzotto • Orkney hand-dived scallops • Roast Merryfield duck • Caramelised orange & almond cake
You can also opt for wine pairings with each course, and they’re spot-on, thoughtfully chosen to enhance the experience without overwhelming it.
Robin has set the gold standard for experiential cuisine. The Counter is more than just dinner, it’s a moment. This was one of those evenings that stays with you.
Thank you @the_counter_tw for such a memorable night 🫶🏼 {Gifted} Already counting down to my next visit…
