THE ‘DRSHTI’ COLLECTION By Sisters Liv and Kate Thurlwell
We’ve long been fans of local jeweller Liv Thurwell, here she tells us about her new collection in collaboration with her sister, Kate.
We’re sisters – Kate and Liv Thurlwell. Liv Thurlwell is an emerging contemporary British jeweller, and this is our first jewellery collection designed as a team. Jewellery runs in our blood. Our father Chris Thurlwell was trained by David Morris and spent a lifetime making jewellery for people commemorating births, celebrating anniversaries and beginning unions, among them the royal family. He didn’t just pass on his passion for the craft, we inherited an understanding that jewellery tells stories in the way little else can. Stories that are passed through generations in the glint of a gem or the surface of a ring.
Our story, and the story of this collection, began in Kerala. Where we travelled together (pre-Covid). It was an adventure. We laughed a lot. And we fell in love with this part of India and its people. The many beautiful women wear bangles which have long been a part of their culture; they carry different meanings, the most potent of which celebrates the bond of love and partnership. We discovered, too, something sad. Many children in India suffer from blindness and their numbers are so great that at last count, over 8 million with millions more needing cataracts.
So, our collection is designed in the spirit of love and partnership symbolised by the bracelets worn by women in Kerala. Each has the word ‘LOVE’ written in braille. A percentage of proceeds will be donated to Sightsavers; a charity whose mission is to prevent avoidable blindness, support equality for people with disabilities, and advocate for change.
The bracelets are crafted in brushed silver or gold. And a process called granulation makes every piece unique. They can be worn solo or stacked. Everything we produce is sustainable and ethical. We hope you love them as much as we do.
