In the first of our staycation series we explore the finest hotels, bed and breakfasts and accommodation in and around Tunbridge Wells. As residents we rarely take the opportunity to stay in these beautiful places, so we wanted to experience first-hand what is on offer so we can whole-heartedly recommend them to you. Our insider’s guide gives you the low down on everything you need to know, whether you’re hosting family in town or just want to escape for a night away…

Hotel Du Vin is situated in the centre of Tunbridge Wells on Crescent Road, an impressive Georgian, grade II listed building that often-played host to Queen Victoria, with her last visit in 1835. Its architecture is classically imposing and typical of buildings in the town, a ten-minute walk from the mainline train station and 40-minute drive from London Gatwick Airport.

After checking in and leaving our luggage in our room we headed to the terrace to take in the last hour of sunshine with an Aperol spritzer. You are really spoilt in this location, despite being in the centre of town you still get glorious, far-reaching views over Calverley Park looking west towards the Pantiles.

We stayed in their Principal room with a view overlooking the front of the hotel. The twin room was vast with more than enough room for two people to share. The complimentary macarons, dressing gown and slippers all made us feel very welcome and relaxed.

After a long hot soak in the bath (separately, I might add) we decided to check out the hotel bar. The low light and comfy seating meant we could sink into a quiet corner over a glass of Merlot without being disturbed. The bar was well stocked with wines, spirits, beers and ales, along with hot drinks. It was a Sunday night and we were surprised at how quiet it was, a real spot to unwind and reflect before starting a new week.

After a final walk around the hotel grounds we went to our room, as soon as our heads hit the Egyptian cotton pillows, we were asleep. The beds were absolute heaven and hard to leave when we awoke.

Breakfast was served in the Bistro (you can also dine here) where you could help yourself to cereals, croissants, fresh juices. A variety of cooked breakfasts are also available. Every detail has been considered and the staff are warm, friendly and willing to help with anything you might need.

We really enjoyed our stay here and would thoroughly recommend the hotel for a romantic getaway or a place to host family and friends. It would also be perfect for corporate meetings and events with a free car park on-site. The hotel is in an ideal location to enjoy everything our town has on offer including the Pantiles, shopping, restaurants, cafes and theatres.
