Modern Family Heirlooms

Kathleen invited us along to her workshop to tell us more about Cowden Quilt School. The picturesque village of Cowden is on the northern slopes of the weald, it’s the perfect setting to relax, unwind and learn a new craft.

Quilting has long been a popular tradition, important life mile stones would be marked with the making and giving of a quilt; a new marriage, welcoming a baby in to the world or giving a piece to someone who was going away.

The detail and skill that goes in to each quilt is mesmerising, each stitch is methodically placed. Materials used can be symbolic to the individual, allowing historical family events to be lovingly remembered.

Kathleen has been quilting for nine years now, she was spurred on by a new years resolution to take up the hobby and eighteen months ago she started her own quilt making workshops. She saw a gap in the market to pass on her skills and teach beginners the techniques needed to make a unique piece.

Her home is her workshop and she invites groups of up to six people in for a two day beginners course which covers all the basics. Her home is the old village shop, the wooden beamed ceilings are a contrast to the iconic G-Plan furniture within, the soft tones of the décor make for the most relaxing, serene setting.

When she’s not quilting she designs and makes memory quilts and bespoke commissions. She loves giving quilts as presents, the idea of all the hours of hard work keeping someone warm at night is like a warm hug and fills her with joy.

Kathleen is part of a new generation of quilters, she’s the modern take on quilting. She offers traditional techniques in a contemporary setting. She’s making modern family heirlooms that will be treasured for generations to come and best still, she’s teaching everyone else how to do it too!
