Miss Papercut
I meet Steph at her studio, a converted chapel in Five Oak Green. There’s a buzz in the air, her mum is here to help her prepare for this evening’s craft fair at The Spa Hotel. Stock is being lovingly prepared and packaged ready to be sold.
Her studio which is also her home are filled with trinkets and keepsakes that have inspired her work, the light streams in from two large stained glass windows on to the mezzanine floor where she works..
I first met Miss Papercut at another fair she was exhibiting at, her work stood out and I quickly recognised the patience each piece took her to create. Her designs are conjured from nature, comforting scenes of nestled foxes and leaping hares sit alongside precious keepsakes made for new-borns.
Her work is a labour of love, born out of a desire to keep her mind occupied and her hands busy. Steph started to create these intricate pieces of art work when she found herself bed bound after suffering kidney failure. Like any creative she refused to let six months of bed rest go by watching day time television and started a business that has since gone from strength to strength.
Steph gained an Illustration degree from Brighton University and continues to put the skills she learnt into practice. She hand draws each idea and then pain-staking cuts out the design using a scalpel, her range includes framed original pieces, coasters, tea towels and cushions.
The next chapter of her business will see her range being sold by various Tunbridge Wells stockists and online retailers. She runs workshops locally for you to create your own art works.
